Mouser to Sponsor Local Student Team in Solar Car Challenge for Sixth Straight Year

July 18, 2017 - Mouser Electronics, Inc., the industry's new product introduction leader that empowers innovation, is proud to sponsor the Shine Runners Racing Company in the 2017 Solar Car Challenge, taking place July 19-22 at the Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth.

The Shine Runners, a talented group of engineers from Ben Barber Innovation Academy of Mansfield, Texas, put in an impressive performance last year, checking off a total of 549.6 miles on their way to a second-place finish in the classic division.

The Solar Car Challenge was established in 1993 with a goal to motivate students in science and engineering and to increase alternative energy awareness. The challenge teaches high school students around the world how to design and build roadworthy solar cars.

"Mouser proudly supports education, particularly math, science and engineering," said Kevin Hess, Mouser's Senior Vice President of Marketing. "The Solar Car Challenge is a highly creative and educational endeavor, and we are very proud of this group of talented students at Ben Barber."

In 2016, the Mouser-backed Ben Barber team was honored with the prestigious Lockheed Martin Award, presented to the solar car team that displayed the highest level of engineering excellence. Mouser's sponsorship of the Ben Barber solar car team includes financial support as well as providing parts for the car and giving recommendations on development of the vehicle.

On alternating years, the teams race at the world-famous Texas Motor Speedway or drive cross-country to share their project cars with excited crowds along the way. Last year teams endured a sweltering seven-day trek from Fort Worth to Minneapolis powered by the sun. At this year's race, the Mouser-sponsored team from Ben Barber will be competing against 16 teams at the Texas Motor Speedway — 15 from across the U.S. and one from Nassau, Bahamas. In all, 36 teams will be competing in four divisions.

The teams traveled to the Dallas-Fort Worth area for 10 days of meetings and workshops, beginning July 13 and culminating in four days of racing.
